At Risk of Plasmodium Falciparum Malaria
- If treatment of an uncomplicated attack of malaria caused by these parasites is delayed
- Second and third trimesters of pregnancy
- Patients with HIV/AIDS
- People who have undergone splenectomy
High-transmission areas
- Young children
- Visitors (of any age) from non-endemic areas
Transmission areas defined
- High transmission: hyperendemic or holoendemic area where the prevalence is over 50% most of the year among children aged 2–9 years
- Moderate transmission area: mesoendemic area where the prevalence is 11–50% during most of the year among children aged 2–9 years
- Low transmission area: hypoendemic area where the prevalence is 10% or less during most of the year among children aged 2–9 years
